Index numbers are calculated with a base year value of 100. It is important to select a base year which has a reasonably representative value. The purpose of index numbers is to allow easy comparisons when using time series data. For example, an index number of 150 will show clearly that the value has increased by 50%. The base year is often now referred to as the reference year.
