Footsie -FTSE 100
A widely quoted index denoting shifts in the average share price level among 100 of the largest public companies in the UK. The market prices are plotted regularly through each working day and their weighted average is the basis of the index. A rise in the index indicates greater confidence in the financial community about UK economic prospects generally, so the Footsie is considered an important leading indicator. The term stands for the Financial Times Stock Exchange 100, though it is usually referred to as the Footsie.
