Older People

 A term given to people who are aged 65 years and over. They form one group of service users or clients and patients who use the health and social care services. Services provided for older people include health care, social care, domiciliary services, day care  , private and voluntary care. There are other terms for older people such as senior citizens, old age pensioners, elders and elderly people. Older people form a high proportion of the population in the United Kingdom. In recent years there has been an increasing number of older people and, therefore, this has put pressure on the demand for health and social care services.

To be able to relate to others independent of disability or impairment; to be given the appropriate equipment to promote communication, e.g. hearing aids, Bliss boards

 To be respected for their individual beliefs; to be encouraged to participate in activities which support their personal identity and promote positive self-esteem

Exercise and mobility

Rights of older people  

 To be able to take regular exercise; to be encouraged to be as mobile as possible and, if appropriate, for suitable aids and equipment to be supplied

Healthy diet   

Rights of older people

 To be supported with a diet which meets their dietary needs. Support should be given if required with shopping, cooking, or provided by meals on wheels

Independence     

Rights of older people

To be able to make decisions about their daily lives; to live in a place of their own choice, preferably their own home whenever possible; to receive relevant support so that they can be as independent as possible

 To meet others with similar interests; to build rapport and share experiences with others, e.g. reminiscence

Rest and a sense of safety in a secure environment

To be able to feel safe and protected and free from harm; to live in a safe environment, whenever possible, an older people’s environment should be assessed as being safe and healthy

Routines, e.g. hygiene, washing, showering, housework

 To be able to maintain relevant routines necessary to support daily living; to receive assistance as and when required

Stimulation     

Rights of older people

To be able to continue with lifelong learning if they wish; and to meet with others for recreation and hobbies, e.g. keep fit, card games, etc.
