Periodic payments order
An order made by the court in family law that one spouse pay the other or a child of the family regular maintenance payments of a specified amount, e.g.£500 per month. The court can order that these are made by direct debit or standing order and can also make an attachment of earnings order under which the employer deducts the payments from the employee’s pay and sends them to the court. The order can last indefinitely or for a fixed period of time, but comes to an end if the recipient remarries. The sum specified can be altered.
